Tip of the Month
Use It or Lose It
Inactivity in young children is a growing problem, with studies showing that as many as 1 in 4 children does not participate in any free-time physical activity and spends an average of 4 to 5 hours watching television every day.
This inactivity can lead to a number of health related issues, including the onset of obesity and the development of chronic diseases that can often times be life threatening.
An important way to offset inactivity and the short and long term consequences is for parents and teachers to act as role models through their words and actions; encourage your kids to stay active, but also incorporate fitness and healthy eating into everyday life. Running is just one of many activities that children can enjoy as they become more active and stay off of the couch! Activities such as jumping rope, dancing, hiking, biking, and walking are good examples of low impact and fun things for kids and parents or teachers to do together. Playing team sports such as softball, baseball, and soccer are also a great way for kids to stay active both physically and socially.
