Question of the Month
What noticeable changes have you seen in your students since they began Mighty Milers?
Last month’s question was: What motivational devices/strategies work the best for you when your students are struggling to keep up with their Mighty Milers mileage goals?
Many Site Coordinators report using the Mighty Milers incentive prizes, such as membership cards, water bottles, or medals, to encourage their students to put forth their best effort in every Mighty Milers session, but when the incentive prizes are presented by the Site Coordinators in a creative way the students are particularly motivated. An example of this creativity is demonstrated by a Site Coordinator who allows a different student to wear the sample marathon of miles medal during each session; this is an earned honor and it is another short-term goal that motivates the student’s to be as mighty as they can!
Running with a buddy is always more fun than running alone, and it makes goals seems more attainable! In an effort to promote camaraderie and more miles, one Site Coordinator created a buddy system amongst her Mighty Milers. Students who run at similar paces are paired together and they support each other to reach their goals!
Mixing track & field events or other running intensive sports in to the Mighty Milers sessions is a great way to get some miles in while allowing kids to explore the many options that running presents them with. Maybe a student who struggles to run laps is actually a great sprinter and excels on a relay team, or another student just needs to kick a soccer ball while running in order to realize his or her love for running!
