Question of the Month

How did your Mighty Milers celebrate National Running Day on June 2, 2010?

Last month’s question was: What can you do, or have you done, to help out students who want to run but are facing obstacles (body image, peer isolation, economic, physical, etc. . .) that are getting in the way of their exercise regimen?

Poor body self-image affects many adolescents and children, and unfortunately an overweight child may be reluctant to take part in sports or physical activity because he or she is self-conscious. It is important to encourage participation rather than performance so that all children become comfortable with themselves and physical activity. Another method of encouraging activity is though the introduction of fitness role models who have a variety of healthy body types.  Many professional athletes can serve as role models, but think locally as well. Has a teacher completed a marathon recently, or has a parent started a running club? Are there high school athletes who can make guest appearances at your Mighty Milers sessions?  Anyone who has achieved a healthy lifestyle through dedication to physical activity can serve as a role model! Role models and encouragement can make your students feel better about their bodies so they can have fun running and exercising with their classmates.
