Accomplishments:

• Elana won the silver medal in the 10,000 meters in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

• She held the world record in the half-marathon for over 14 years.

• She won second place in the 1995 Boston Marathon.

Fun Facts:

• Elana leads the organization that runs Mighty Milers in South Africa, except over there they call it Mighty Meters!

• Elana won the first race she ever entered – the FOOT OF AFRICA Half Marathon – when she was just 13.

Quote: “It was amazing. I kept telling myself, ‘It is true, it is true, I am here.’ It was very emotional. I had waited such a long time,” about finally being allowed to compete in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the first year that South Africa had participated in the Olympics in 32 years. (South Africa was not allowed to participate because of apartheid, a racist system that forced whites and blacks to live separately.)
